Fellowship: It’s Not Just Your Grandpa’s Freemasonry

Okay, let’s be real. When you think “Freemasonry,” images of old guys in stuffy suits and dimly lit lodges might come to mind. But hold on! There’s a whole lot more to this fraternity than meets the eye.

One of the best things about Freemasonry is the fellowship. It’s about forming genuine connections with guys from all walks of life, sharing experiences, and supporting each other.

Now, I’m not gonna lie, sometimes bridging the generation gap can be a challenge. You’ve got the veteran Masons who’ve been around the block a few times (and love to remind you of it!). They’ll hit you with the classic lines like, “That’s not how we did it back in my day!” or “We already tried that, and it didn’t work.”

But here’s the thing: we can’t let those comments discourage us. We need to keep pushing forward, finding creative ways to bring fresh ideas to the lodge while still respecting our traditions. It’s all about finding that balance, you know?

So, how do we make Freemasonry more appealing to younger guys and keep them coming back for more?

  • Create spaces for casual hangouts: At Mustang Lodge, we have this awesome spot called the “Ruffians Refuge.” We gather there before lodge meetings, fire up some cigars (optional, of course!), kick back, watch some TV, and just shoot the breeze. It’s a chance to unwind, connect with each other on a personal level, and maybe even brainstorm some cool new ideas for the lodge.
  • Embrace mentorship: Having an experienced Mason to guide you through the degrees and answer your questions is invaluable. It’s like having a Masonic big brother who’s got your back. Plus, it’s a great way to learn from their wisdom and experience.
  • Don’t be afraid to try new things: Just because something “didn’t work before” doesn’t mean it won’t work now. The world is constantly changing, and Freemasonry needs to adapt with it. Let’s be open to new ideas, new ways of doing things, and new ways of connecting with each other.
  • Make it fun! Let’s face it, nobody wants to be part of a boring organization. Plan some social events, get involved in community service projects, and create opportunities for members to have a good time together.

Freemasonry is more than just rituals and traditions. It’s about building lasting friendships, supporting each other, and making a positive impact on our communities. Let’s keep the fellowship strong and ensure that Freemasonry continues to thrive for generations to come!

Sammy is living proof that you can be a tech guru with a Master's degree in Software Engineering, a motorcycle enthusiast, a Marvel Comics fan, and a storm chaser – all while finding time for Freemasonry. He's a 32° Scottish Rite Mason, a Junior Warden, a Grotto Secretary, and a self-proclaimed "Omerta Mason" – all titles he wears with pride. By day, he keeps the aviation industry safe as a Training Requirements Specialist; by night (and sometimes day!), he chases tornadoes across the Oklahoma plains for a local news station (talk about an adrenaline rush!). He's passionate about sharing his Masonic journey and connecting with brothers from all walks of life. Just don't ask him to choose between his love for coding and his Indian Challenger – it's a tie!
